Traffic Safety

Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center
Kansas Department of Transportation

The Kansas Department of Transportation will present a two-hour training explaining the importance of traffic safety and the lives that can be saved by traffic enforcement and the criminal activity that can be associated with this.

Information will be provided on STEP, this represents a KDOT-sponsored public education and enforcement partnership with local and state police agencies aimed at increasing travelers' compliance with Kansas occupant restraint and impaired driving laws. Enforcement is accomplished through four annual campaigns--also called mobilizations or enforcements--consisting of an agency's choice of saturation patrols and/or checkpoints or special action activities. Each campaign has a principal focus--DUI, occupant restraint, or both--and each goes after speeders and texters, as well. The STEP program can also provide traffic enforcement equipment that can benefit your agency.

The School Zone Program will be discussed. This is an excellent program provided by the State of Kansas that improves school zones in towns with a population of fewer than 20,000 people. The improvements to school zones that are provided include pavement striping, school zone signs, and reduced speed assemblies.

The "school zone" starts at the front door of the school and includes the entire campus and as many of the surrounding neighborhood blocks that have a significant level of school-generated traffic. This usually includes the streets along the perimeter of the school and the area of one or two blocks surrounding it. When identifying a school zone, you should consider all types of travel modes and route possibilities. This zone should then be marked with special signage to alert drivers of the high concentration of children. School crossing signs, speed signs, school zone pavement markings, and other traffic calming devices remind drivers to treat the area with special care and attention.
