School Resource Officer as Teacher

Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center
Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center

Course Description:

A good School Resource Officer focuses on the triad concept of school-based policing. The triad concept divides the SRO's responsibilities into educator, counselor, and law enforcement. While an SRO's primary responsibility is safety, the SRO should also serve as a teacher of law-related lessons as well as those lessons which promote a positive image of law enforcement for the youth in their community and abroad. This training is designed to impart the value of seizing teaching opportunities on a regular basis to share specialized knowledge and build relationships with the school community.

The purpose of this training is to develop a lesson plan which an SRO is comfortable teaching to audiences within their school community. Participants will work with a small group to develop a topic into a class presentation. In addition to the class presentation they develop, each officer will have access to presentations created by other groups in the class to use in their schools.
