Course description: 

Injuries to babies and children are often missed as abuse, due to the lack of awareness and knowledge on the part of law enforcement and medical personnel. This course will cover various types of physical child abuse, including abuse that resulted in homicide. Photographs and case studies will be utilized to enhance learning. This course provides investigators with information to assist them in identifying injuries consistent with child abuse. 

 

Core Competencies: 

  • Participants will employ best practices as they investigate any crime from its beginning to its eventual disposition; either as an individual, or as part of an investigatory team.

 

Course Objectives: 

  • Identify and recognize indicators of physical abuse, including bruises, burns, pediatric strangulation, fractures, head trauma, and abdominal injury 
  • Recognize the factors in an accidental death 
  • Understand the alternative light use
