As family and friends filled the auditorium, the students of the 341st Basic Training Class prepared for their final assignment at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC). These students are ready to walk across the stage, take the oath, and return home to serve and protect the communities they represent across Kansas.
Bryan Carey, Police Instructor Senior and Class Coordinator at KLETC, along with Doug Schroeder, Director of Programs at KLETC, introduced the graduating class and welcomed two distinguished speakers: Representative Dan Hawkins, Speaker of the Kansas House of Representatives, and Ed Hudson, Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at the University of Kansas.
Representative Hawkins encouraged the graduates to consider the legacy they will build in their law enforcement careers. “You will become known for things that you do in your community,” he said. “You just want them to be the greatest things to represent in your community.”
Vice Chancellor Hudson shared a personal story about his kindergarten teacher and the life lessons that stayed with him. “Attitude, Mr. Hudson, is half your grade,” he recalled her saying. The second lesson: “Eddie, keep your eyes on your own paper.”
Class President Officer Andrew Knudsen of the Kingman Police Department also addressed the audience. “While our time at KLETC ends today, the real work is just beginning,” he said. “Because in this job, learning never stops. Training never stops. And the moment we think it does—that’s when people get hurt, or worse.”
The 341st class leaves KLETC prepared and committed to uphold the values and responsibilities of law enforcement across Kansas.
Under the authority of Vice Provost and Director of Police Training Darin Beck, graduates received certificates attesting the satisfactory completion of a full-time basic course of instruction, and certification as Kansas law enforcement officers from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s Law enforcement licensing authority.
