A big crowd gathered at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) in Integrity Auditorium on April 11, 2025, for the graduation of the 339th Basic Training Class. This marks the final step the students take before returning to their communities to fulfill their duties as law enforcement officers in the state of Kansas.

KLETC Police Instructor Senior Dave Ohlde, the Class Coordinator, introduced the class, and KLETC Director of Programs Doug Schroeder spoke to the audience about a concept in criminal justice known as procedural justice and its four pillars. It is a concept the graduates became well-versed in during their time at KLETC.

“It is an intentional practice, and these individuals have been practicing that for the past 14 weeks,” Schroeder said. “It's about building institutions that earn legitimacy through behavior, not through means of force or fear. When we incorporate voice, neutrality, respect, and trustworthiness into our interactions, we foster longer relationships, reduce conflict, and build stronger communities.”

The University of Kansas Medical Center Police Department’s own graduate and Class President, Officer Christopher Dorn, addressed friends and family about how the class survived the training and what lies ahead in their future in law enforcement.

In his closing remarks, he set a benchmark for his classmates to strive for.  “I challenge each of you to become the author of your own story, but more than that, be the hero of your own story. The hero is not an end goal. It is an ideal to chase, an ever-distant horizon that keeps us driving forward. If you place yourself as your hero five years ahead of you, you may never reach them, but in trying, you will become the best version of yourself over and over again.”

Under the authority of Vice Provost and Director of Police Training Darin Beck, graduates received certificates attesting the satisfactory completion of a full-time basic course of instruction, and certification as Kansas law enforcement officers from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s Law enforcement licensing authority.
