Family and friends cheered loudly as the 333rd Basic Training Class graduation came to an end
On November 14, 2024, at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC), the crowd watched officers from across Kansas graduate and head off to their respective departments.
KLETC Police Instructor Senior David Ohlde, the class coordinator, introduced the graduates. He was followed by KLETC Associate Director, Alvin Sowers. Sowers shared with the graduates that he, too, once sat on that stage as a member of the 81st Basic Training Class in 1984. Drawing from his years of experience, Sowers offered advice for a successful career, saying:
“To have a long, successful career, you must find your mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual harmony—whatever it takes to achieve that. For me, it meant finding activities outside of law enforcement. I’ll add that not all of those activities need to be with your law enforcement colleagues. Sometimes, it’s your friends outside of law enforcement who help keep you grounded.”
Class President Deputy Dan Mattox of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office also addressed the graduates. Speaking about the sense of purpose that comes with the job, he stated:
“The men and women of Class 333 say to evil: while we are on watch, we stand as a wall. We protect the public, safeguard lives and property, and go where others dare not—into danger—to stop evil and to protect each other.”
Under the authority of Vice Provost and Director of Police Training Darin Beck, graduates received certificates attesting the satisfactory completion of a full-time basic course of instruction, and certification as Kansas law enforcement officers from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s Law enforcement licensing authority.
