Defensive Commentary Driving

Defensive Commentary Driving is a concept-based class that introduces an active thinking process while driving. The process allows students to visualize potential dangers presented during a driving session and predict avoidance strategies and evasive routes to avoid driving conflicts. This class will have students vocalize what information they see and speak out about learned techniques to avoid potential hazards during live hands-on driving events.

 

Core Competencies: 

  • Participants will be able to decide upon prescribed courses of action or techniques that will provide a greater level of safety in a variety of environments, events and situations.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply the components of safe driving during non-emergency driving.
  • Distinguish the different kinds of vision used during driving and analyze their role in driver safety.
  • Explain the importance of a driver's attitude as it relates to being a safe driver.
  • Predict the dangers of distracted driving and identify key components of defensive driving.

Equipment:

  • Students will need to bring a department vehicle WITHOUT a cage for driving portion. It must sit 4 people comfortably.
