Death Notification and Impaired Driving Enforcement Training

Gardner
Gardner Police Department

Death notification is recognized to be one of the most difficult tasks

faced by law enforcement officers and first responders.  The moment of notification is one that most people remember vividly for the rest of their life – sometimes with pain and anger if this news was not delivered with compassion and professionalism. Over the past 30 years, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has worked with tens of thousands of victims affected by drunk and/or drugged driving crashes.  MADD has come to understand that the way a victim’s family is told of a loved one’s death can be an important factor in their ability to process their grief and accept their loss.

This 8-hour training will teach strategies for compassionate and thorough death notifications.  Topics to be covered: Who should notify; protocol for proper notification; proper attitude of delivery; reactions to a loved one’s death; viewing determination; uniqueness of sudden death; needs of the bereaved; stress and notifier; the effects of working DUI crashes on law enforcement and first responders.

Technical Trooper Nuss, a DRE and member of the Kansas Highway Patrol’s Drug and Alcohol Evaluation Unit, will cover impaired driving enforcement – Detecting both alcohol and/or drug impairment in drivers. He will also provide training for Ignition Interlock Device’s (IID) – IID Requirements/regulations and process of performing roadside IID enforcement.
