Criminal Interdiction and Rural Patrol Tactics
Course Description: This is a two day course, with the majority of the class being lecture style in the classroom. In addition to the lecture portion of the class, there will be hands on exercises that consist of vehicle searches and familiarization with common contraband concealments and hidden compartments.
Core Competencies: This HANDS-ON course, developed for both rookie and veteran law enforcement officers working in both a rural and urban environment, will cover: Officer safety during traffic stops; Conducting safe, legal, ethical, and professional traffic stops and consensual encounters; Target vehicle identification; Roadside interview techniques and detecting deception; Professional, minimally intrusive, safe, and bulletproof way to search a vehicle; Concealment and hidden compartments; Commercial motor vehicle (CMV) encounters; Impaired Driving in Interdiction; K-9 team; Courtroom Testimony; Strategies for Successful Case Follow-up.

Instructor Bios:
Ed Van Buren, Sergeant (Ret.) - Supervisor and Trainer of K-9/Interdiction Unit Douglas County (Nebraska) Sheriff's Department. Ed is the owner of Code 2 K-9 Services LLC in Omaha, Nebraska. Ed spent over 30 years in Law Enforcement, 18 years as a K-9 Deputy and 11 years as a K-9 Supervisor and Trainer. Ed also spent over five years working undercover in a Narcotics Task Force purchasing illegal drugs and guns from outlaw bikers, gang members, white supremacists and many other characters. The undercover work provided Ed with invaluable experience that would enable him to read, understand and communicate with some of the most dangerous criminals that officers encounter.
Michael W. Varilek, Deputy Sheriff - K-9 Handler/Drug Recognition Expert Corson County (South Dakota) Sheriff's Office. Mike is a Patrol Sergeant for the Corson County Sheriff's Office in North Central South Dakota where he is currently a member of the North Central South Dakota Multi-Jurisdiction Criminal Enforcement Team (NCSD MJCET), a multi-jurisdiction team made up of six counties spanning over 9,600 square miles, which travels from county-to-county conducting criminal enforcement operations. Until recently, Mike also served as a full-time Task Force Officer for the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force. Mike has been a certified Law Enforcement Officer in South Dakota since 2006, Narcotic Detector Dog Handler since 2009, and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) since 2017. Mike also holds certifications as an Interdiction Officer under the National Criminal Enforcement Association (NCEA), Search & Seizure Instructor for Blue to Gold Legal, LLC., and Law Enforcement R.A.D.A.R. Instructor. In addition to his law enforcement duties, Mike serves as the Director of Emergency Management for Corson County, achieving certification as Advanced Certified Emergency Manager, and has served in various leadership capacities within his local Fraternal Order of Police Lodge.
